TRADITIONAL UZUMLU VILLAGE

Uzumlu village is 500m above sea level set in a fertile plain surrounded by an imposing mountain range. The beauty of the village has attracted a few foreigners, but Uzumlu remains a working village relying on agriculture and traditional crafts. The village's name translates as "with grapes" and vines producing a variety of grapes abound. Fields of cotton, sesame, aniseed, wheat, barley and summer vegetables surround the village while on the mountain slopes apples, pears, pomegranates, almonds and olives are grown. Every Friday there is a thriving market for fruit, vegetables and other goods.

PictureThe heart of the village is a square with home-produce shops, a barber, a post office (with money change), an Internet cafe, a mosque as well as the inevitable tea-houses. Wandering around the lanes that fan out from the square you can see women weaving cotton on traditional pedal looms in front of their houses.

PictureThere are a number of restaurants and a wine bar in the village offering local wines and a variety of good food and some have free wi-fi. There are three other restaurants within a short drive and the village itself is less than 2km from the villas. There is a regular Dolmus minibus service running to Calis Beach and Fethiye from the central square.

The Roman/Lycian city of Cadianda is behind and above the village at 900m and is reached by a dirt road in a 15 minute drive from the village and the site is well worth a visit for the fascinating archaeology.
